AI Translator
An open-source AI translator — text and documents across 33+ languages with auto-detection and writing styles. Plug in your own API key and go.
Overview
AI Translator is a clean, fast translation app for text and documents across 33+ languages — and it's becoming open source, so anyone can clone it, plug in their own API key, and start translating. No accounts, no per-seat pricing, no middleman: your key, your usage, your data.
Bring Your Own Key
The whole idea is that you own the engine. Pick a provider, paste your API key, choose a model, and you're translating — the key stays in your browser and calls go straight from you to your provider.
Because there's no backend brokering your requests, there's nothing to pay for and nothing to trust — the app is just a really nice front end over the model you already have access to.
Text Translation
The core is a fast, two-pane translator with automatic source-language detection, instant swapping, and copy/listen controls. It covers 33+ languages and translates as you type.
Document Translation
Beyond plain text, it handles whole documents — PDF, DOCX, and PPTX — translating the content while preserving the structure, so what comes out reads like the original in another language rather than a wall of text.
Writing Styles & History
A built-in writing assistant offers different translation styles — formal, casual, and more — so the output matches the context, not just the dictionary. Past translations are kept in a local history so you can jump back to anything you've done.
The Stack
Built with Next.js and TypeScript, styled with Tailwind CSS and Radix/shadcn primitives, with Lucide icons. It's intentionally lean — a focused, well-built front end with no server to run, which is exactly what makes the bring-your-own-key, open-source model work.
Why Open Source
Translation tools tend to lock you into their pricing and their data handling. Opening this one up flips that: the code is yours to read and host, the key is yours to bring, and the only thing between you and a translation is the provider you already chose. It's the version of the tool I'd want to use myself.
